| According to the legend, the Goddess Inanna visited the underworld when the husband of her eldest sister died in order to be certain his funeral rites were properly observed. As she passed through several gateways while descending into the underworld, she was forced to surrender her clothing and jewels, symbols of her power. After arriving naked and powerless, she was taken prisoner by the Lord of the Underworld, and imprisoned -- until she escaped with the help of Father Enki, who sent out a pack of demonic beasts to distract her guardians. Together, they negotiated Inanna's release from the underworld under the condition that she find someone to take her place. Upon her return to her own realm, Inanna discovered that her lover Dazaer took over her throne. In a fit of rage, she killed him, sending him to the underworld in her place. After realizing what she had done, she began to cry a lake of sapphire tears around her throne.. In her grief over Dazaer, Inanna sealed herself in her sanctuary, instilling four great pillars with the power to enforce her self-imposed quarantine. As the legend goes, Inanna's rage has been festering for centuries as she lies dormant in her cocoon, surrounded only by her loyal disciples.
